What is psilocybin?

Psilocybin is a naturally occurring psychedelic compound that is found in certain species of mushrooms. At this point, there are about 100 species of mushroom containing psilocybin that have been identified. Each type of mushroom has different, potency, and properties to the psilocybin contained in the species.

Psilocybin belongs to a class of compounds called tryptamines and is chemically related to the neurotransmitter serotonin. Psilocybin is known as “magic mushrooms” and for its therapeutic properties, and has been used for centuries in various cultures for religious, spiritual, or recreational purposes.

When ingested, psilocybin is converted into psilocin in the body, which is the compound responsible for the therapeutic effects. Psilocybin and psilocin affect the serotonin receptors in the brain, change thought processes, and enhance sensory experience.

The effects of psilocybin may include an increased positive mood, general performance, creative problem-solving, pain tolerance, energy, and sex drive. It also may decrease negative self-talk, intrusive thoughts, fear, mood swings, irritability, or impatience.

Dosing Options

Micro

A micro-dose of psilocybin is usually in a capsule in the range of .25-.5 grams. There are over 100 strains of psilocybin and they all have varying effects and potency. Ideally, an individual would start with a .25-gram dose of a moderate strain with 3/5 potency. When it comes to micro dosing more isn’t better. The idea is to find the strain of mushrooms that works with your anatomy to get your desired response. Impact provides the support, expertise, and assessments to assist you in finding the strain, dose, and frequency that works best for your long-term goals.

  • Mini

A mini dose of psilocybin is .5 grams to 1.5 grams.  It is used at Impact either monthly or bimonthly depending on the individual.  Mini doses are used to mildly alter perception and increase the duration of the positive effects of psilocybin.  Mini doses can also be effective at having more noticeable or marked improvement in a shorter period without the risks associated with a Macro-dose.

  • Macro

A macro dose of Psilocybin is usually 2-5 grams of psilocybin which is most easily taken in capsule form. Not all mushrooms are created equally and they range in potency. 2 grams of a potent strain of mushroom is enough to provide an individual with an altered state of consciousness that can provide improvement to mental health. Macro-dosing a variety of mushrooms that you have micro-dosed is recommended and can aid in your comfort level as well as your long-term outcomes. Since there is more potential for discomfort with macro-dosing it is helpful to have a supportive environment, intention setting and sitter to help guide you through the process.

√ Ideal for someone with moderate to severe symptoms/discomfort

    √ Moderate Impairment

√ Immediate changes to perception and symptoms
